Maxeys Depot

Yellow with red trim, Maxeys' old Georgia Railroad depot is a picturesque reminder of busier days in this quiet community in Oglethorpe County. The rails through town (pop. 210) were taken up in the 1980s, and the old stores are mostly abandoned.

Maxeys was on the Georgia Railroad's 40-mile branch line from Union Point to Athens, built in 1841. It was abandoned by Seaboard System in 1984.

The Railway Express Agency was a package delivery service associated with rail transportation. It ended operations in 1975. (2009 photo).
