In 1884 the Florida Central & Western, which had been established a couple of years earlier, was merged into the new Florida Railway and Navigation Company. In 1888 the FR&NC was reorganized to become the Florida Central & Peninsular Railway, which built a line across coastal Georgia to Savannah in 1893-94.
