Toonerville Trolley The "Toonerville Trolley" in its little building in St. Marys. This motorcar traveled on the St. Marys Railroad between St. Marys and Kingsland in the late 1920s and 1930s. After it was retired from the rails, the wooden body was removed and incorporated into a waterfront residence where it remained until the 1970s. In 1974, the St. Marys Kiwanis Club extracted it from the then-vacant house and began restoring it. A similar auto chassis was acquired and the vehicle was soon made operable for street use. It is now occasionally used in parades and special events. The nickname "Toonerville Trolley" came from the comic strip "Toonerville Folks," drawn by cartoonist Fontaine Fox. Syndicated from 1908 to 1955, the strip featured a rickety trolley that traveled from a small town to a railroad line nearby. (Osborne Road in downtown St. Marys). Website.
