Oconee River Bridge near Mount Vernon

Crossing the river west of Mount Vernon is this plate girder swing bridge on the former Seaboard line between Savannah and Montgomery. Now used by the shortline Heart of Georgia Railroad, the bridge stands about 26 miles upstream from the river's conjunction with the Ocmulgee.

The line was constructed by the Savannah, Americus & Montgomery in the early 1890s.

Parts of the turning mechanism can be seen in this photo.
